Smart Grid

Smart Grid

Mireille Hildebrandt has written a consultancy report for Smart Energy Collective (KEMA) on the implications of the introduction of the Smart Grid for the current and upcoming legal framework on data protection, within EU jurisdiction. The focus was not – merely – on the sharing of energy usage data, but on the inferences that may be drawn from such data (aggregates) based on e.g. predictive analytics. This means that the study is notably relevant for Big Data analytics and various other techniques of artificial intelligence, employed to pre empt user behaviours (behavioural advertising, ambient intelligence, flexible pricing in online web shops – but also in the smart grid).

The assignment included input from two SEC workshops and generated various keynotes (e.g. Deep Dive Privacy Event 2013, Platform Informatie Beveiliging 2014). The study is available on the personal website of Hildebrandt and has been disseminated in hardcopy and digital form to a number of Dutch, EU and American stakeholders.
