Privacy by design

The PI.lab will organise two closed sessions for the Dutch Data Protection Authority. The second one will take place in November 2019 and will concern Privacy by design. Jaap-Henk Hoepman, Ronald Leenes and Marc van Lieshout will give a presentation and lead the discussion on the role of privacy by design in the GDPR.

Certification

The PI.lab will organise two closed sessions for the Dutch Data Protection Authority. The first will take place in October 2019 and concern Certification. Irene Kamara will give a presentation and lead the discussion on the role of certification in the GDPR. She will do so on the basis of a report for the European Commmission, of which she is the first author.

PI.lab Summerschool

The PI.lab has joined forces with imec (Belgium), KULeuven (Belgium) and TU Dresden (Germany) in organizing the first truly interdisciplinary Summerschool.

In 2018, the third edition of the Summerschool will take place. Theme of the Summerschool is ‘AI, Algorithms and Privacy’.

Privacy by design community

The PI.lab has joined forces with ECP (Platform for the information society) in organizing a privacy by design community. In previous years a number of meetings have been held. In 2018, the focus of the meetings will be re-oriented towards organisations directly participating in the data economy. The PI.lab and ECP will together work on the Action Programme ‘Privacy as Innovation Opportunity’, funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Part of this Action Programme is the organization of a number of meetings with developers and privacy officers on a number of specific topics.

Lorentz workshop “Privacy by Design Beyond the Screen”

24-28 April 2017

In April 2017, PI.Lab researchers Bert-Jaap Koops (TILT, and Distinguished Lorentz Fellow 2016/17), Jaap-Henk Hoepman (Radboud University) and Tjerk Timan (TILT) organised an intensive, multidisciplinary Lorentz workshop in Leiden on privacy by design. Some 25 researchers from a wide range of disciplines – including law, ethics, STS, industrial and interaction design, computer science, and privacy engineering – came together in the well-equipped Snellius venue of the Lorentz Center, for a full week of in-depth plenary and breakout discussions.

“Privacy by Design” (PbD) has become a widely supported concept, but is it actually possible to embed legal privacy rules in technology design? And what does it mean to ‘embed’ ‘legal rules’ or ‘privacy protection’ in ‘design’?  The workshop aimed to 1) bridge approaches between disciplines, 2) find common ground between legal, technical, and design concepts; 3) conceptually discuss the ‘locus’ of Privacy by Design (in the hardwiring, in default settings, and/or in the design of the environment); 4) apply Privacy by Design to scenarios of smart toys and augmented reality (AR); and 5) identify implications for law and technology.

Privacy by design deel II

The PI.lab organised on 22 February 2017 a second meeting on Privacy by Design. The event was organised in close cooperation with ECP.  Theme of this meeting was privacy by design in healthcare. The Hague Haga hospital gently hosted the meeting. 

The three presentations covered various aspects which are relevant for privacy by design in healthcare:organisational principles for data processing; a privacy dashboard for patients; a new and sophisticated technology to safely process patient data.

Jaap-Henk Hoepman (PI.lab/Radboud University) chaired the discussion following the presentation. .

ANYWARE: Privacy and location data in the era of machine learning

PILab member Mireille Hildebrandt is organizing an FWO Interdisciplinary Seminar in Brussels on 13 October 2016, from 11.30-16.30 under the title: ANYWARE: Privacy and location data in the era of machine learning.

The event will bring together leading and inconspicuous scholars and scientists on the nexus of machine learning, digital security, philosophy, STS and law, to forage the field where location data, machine learning and privacy meet.

Mireille Hildebrandt is chair and PILab scientific director Jaap-Henk Hoepman is one of the speakers. The event precedes the public defense of the doctorate thesis of Katja de Vries, who has been working on the USEMP project from her position at iCIS, Radboud University Nijmegen.

Supported by the PI.lab, the When Art Meets Science (WAMS) Foundation, is organising a set of side events as part of the international fotofestival Noorderlicht. The events explore the tension between freedom and

control, privacy and surveillance in the virtual world (more information), and take place at the Old Sugar

Factory, Energieweg 10, Groningen, the Netherlands (directions).

On Sunday August 23, 2015, from 15:00-17:00, WAMS is organising a debate between artists (Bastashevski –

CH, Curran – IRL, Crispin – USA, Schokker – NL) and scientists (Gürses – USA, Hildebrandt – NL, Bellanova – N).

We will discuss a number of questions. What are the underlying problems we (citizens, society, business,

government) are facing, and what is our way out? Is ‘privacy’ the right frame to discuss the challenges we are facing? Or is there a more general disconnect with the technology that is increasingly surrounding, nurturing and nudging us? Can we give ourselves more control over this technology? Should we even try? Can art help science, and can science help art? If so, how?

Jaap-Henk Hoepman vormde samen met Klaas Bruin (Nationale Politie) een panel op een op 30 April door

Cqure georganiseerde kennissessie over privacy

te Amsterdam. Aanwezig waren een 40-tal professionals werkzaam op het gebied van privacy bescherming en informatie beveiliging, bij grote en klein bedrijven.

Na een korte inleiding van Klaas en mij ontstond er een levendige discussie over tal van onderwerpen. Daarbij

werd Klaas bevraagd over zijn jarenlange ervaring als privacy officer bij KLM, en werd ik gevraagd naar de

mogelijkheden (en beperkingen) van de techniek, als het gaat om privacy bescherming. Zo kwam bijvoorbeeld het spanningsveld tussen privacy en big data aan bod, en het feit dat ook de politie steeds meer (en lang niet altijd gecontroleerd) gebruik maakt van open bronnen. En maakte Klaas het expliciete onderscheid tussen een privacy officer en een functionaris voor de gegevensbescherming (FG). De eerste is naar zijn mening actief bezig om de organisatie privacy vriendelijk(er) te maken. De tweede is eerder iemand die compliance met weten regelgeving controleert.

Hof in ontvangst. Deze handeling is onderdeel van een bijeenkomst die zich richt op wat ICT-experts, inclusief

ethische hackers, voor de veiligheid en privacy in onze e-samenleving kunnen betekenen en wat de politiek

kan doen om dit te faciliteren. De centrale vraagstelling in het panel is: Wat moet er politiek geregeld worden,

zodat professionele ICT-experts en ethische hackers verantwoordelijke beslissingen kunnen nemen, zowel in

wetgeving als in onderwijs en onderzoek? Jaap-Henk Hoepman neemt vanuit het PI.lab deel aan dit panel.

Title: Ibis: An Overlay Mix Network for Microblogging

Abstract: Microblogging services such as Twitter are extremely popular.

While they are commonly used by people who wish to reveal their names and friends to the world, some users, such as activists on the ground, may wish to be able to post without automatically revealing their

identities or locations. An obvious approach is to use a low-latency anonymity system, such as Tor. However, low-latency systems fall prey to end-to-end timing attacks easily accomplished by an ISP or a government monitoring clients while also watching for posts to appear in real time on the microblogging site.

We present Ibis, a high-latency mix network designed specifically for microblogging. Ibis is an overlay network: the mix nodes can be microblogging clients that come online only sporadicly, and the intermediate encrypted messages are themselves posted as microblogged entries. We accomplish this through a novel cryptographic mix message format that uses only 47 bytes of overhead, while maintaining three-hop,

128-bit security against offline attack. This is joint work with Paul Hendry.

Op vrijdag 14 november geeft Lodewijk van Zwieten, Landelijk Officier van Justitie voor Cybercrime bij het Landelijk Parket, een lezing voor het PI.lab. De lezing vindt plaats van 15:00-16:00, in zaal HG00.307, van het Huygensgebouw, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Na afloop is er een borrel op de benedenverdieping van het Mercator 1 gebouw.

Het onderwerp is het nieuwe wetsvoorstel om de politie de mogelijkheid te geven om te hacken. Lodewijk zal zowel op de technische als de juridische kanten ingaan.

Op al deze vragen zal Jaap-Henk Hoepman je een antwoord geven. Zelf hoopt hij van de aanwezigen antwoord te krijgen op slechts één vraag: hoe maak je privacyvriendelijke systemen ook gebruikersvriendelijk (en dus bruikbaar)?

eID discussie bijeenkomst

Het Privacy & Identity lab organiseert samen met de Waag Society een discussie bijeenkomst over de eID

plannen van de overheid. Doel is om duidelijkheid te krijgen over de uitganspunten van het eID stelsel, inzicht te krijgen in de (technische) architectuur van het stelsel, en geïnformeerd te worden over de huidige status van het eID stelsel. Vervolgens kunnen de aanwezigen met elkaar hierover in debat gaan. In de hoop een maatschappelijke discussie over eID in Nederland te openen, een draagvlak voor een verantwoord eID stelsel in Nederland te creëren, en met de verwachting dat feedback uit deze discussie kan helpen bij de verdere ontwikkeling van het stelsel.

Sjoera Nas (CBP) on DPA enforcement against Google and other digital giants @TILT

On Wednesday, 26th of March, Sjoera Nas (Internet and telecom expert of the Dutch DPA) speaks @TILT on “Dealing with Google, smart TV’s and other digital giants. Enforcement of data protection by the Dutch DPA”.

Abstract

Building on her experience as Internet and telecom expert at the Dutch Data Protection Authority and her

representation of the DPA in the technology subgroup of the Article 29 Working Party, Ms. Nas will discuss

regulatory developments in the Internet sector from the perspective of enforcement. The session will provide

insight into the Dutch DPA’s recently concluded investigations of Google’s new privacy policy, monitoring of viewing behaviour on Philips smart tv’s as well as other recent investigations and their outcomes. It

will also shed light on current developments at the EU level by discussing the Article 29 Working Party’s recent

activities and opinions related to the Internet and mobile communications.

Industrie-consultatie Privacy-vriendelijk Innoveren

Op 4 februari organiseert het PI.lab een industrie-consultatie met als doel om bedrijven te inspireren tot privacy-vriendelijke innovatie.

Daartoe zullen een aantal presentaties gehouden worden door bedrijven die al een privacy-vriendelijke benadering in hun bedrijfsprocessen hebben doorgevoerd en is er een demomarkt

waar verschillende voorbeelden en initiatieven gepresenteerd worden. Tevens is er de gelegenheid tot gesprekken in kleinere setting in de vorm van ‘spreekkamers’. Naast de  technologische voorbeelden zullen er ook dienstverleners vertegenwoordigd zijn die kunnen adviseren en begeleiden bij innovaties.

De ochtend wordt afgesloten met een discussie

waarin de deelnemers hun visie en vragen kunnen delen, zodat we zo goed mogelijk kunnen inventariseren wat nodig is om privacy-vriendelijke innovaties verder te brengen.

The Privacy & Identity Lab celebrates Data Protection Day

Several years ago, the Council of Europe declared January 28 “Data Protection Day”.

This date was chosen because on January 28, 1981 the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 for the “Protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data” was opened for signature. It thus became an important cornerstone for the protection of privacy in Europe.
