On 24 January 2024, the Privacy and Identity Lab (PI.Lab) organises an online book presentation to celebrate the recent book by Dr. Marc Steen: ‘Ethics for People Who Work in Tech’.
The seminar will be from 15:00 until 16:00, Dutch time (CEST).
During the session, Marc Steen will present his new book.
Marc Steen works as a senior research scientist at TNO, a leading research and technology organization in The Netherlands. He earned MSc, PDEng and PhD degrees in Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology. He worked at Philips and KPN before joining TNO. He is an expert in Human-Centred Design, Value-Sensitive Design, Responsible Innovation, and Applied Ethics of Technology and Innovation.

During the session, Jaap-Henk Hoepman will present his new book: 'Privacy Is Hard and Seven Other Myths. Achieving Privacy through Careful Design’.
In the book, published by MIT Press, he shows how we can build privacy into the design of systems from the start.
Jaap-Henk Hoepman is an associate professor in privacy enhancing protocols and privacy by design at the Digital Security group of the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences of the Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He is a member of iHub, Radboud University’s interdisciplinary research hub on Digitalization and Society. He is also an associate professor in the IT Law section of the Transboundary Legal Studies department of the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen. In addition, he is a guest professor at the PRISEC, the Privacy and Security group of Karlstad University, Sweden.

Professor Joseph Turow will present his new book:
Only three decades ago, it was inconceivable that virtually entire populations would be carrying around wireless phones wherever they went, or that peoples’ exact locations could be tracked by those devices. We now take both for granted. Even just a decade ago the idea that individuals’ voices could be used to identify and draw inferences about them as they shopped or interacted with retailers seemed like something out of a science fiction novel. Yet a new business sector is emerging to do exactly that.
Prof. Turow is Professor of Media Systems & Industries, at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Joseph Turow’s work lies at the intersection of marketing, digital media, and society. His writings explore the power dynamics that shape cultural materials (e.g. ads, supermarket aisles, voice assistants) through which people learn about the world.

Neil Richards is one of the world’s leading experts in privacy law, information law, and freedom of expression. He holds the Koch Distinguished Professorship at Washington University School of Law, where he co-directs the Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law.
